Webb’s works take their titles from places she has visited. San Luis IX (2001) was created after riding a horse to a small village in Portugal, where Webb observed a grid of alternating black and white lines on a building. In the San Luis series Webb explores the effects on the picture plane of using black and white to outline triangles, squares and rectangles.
Webb then returns to her studio after her travels to create her carefully considered compositions. In the preliminary stages, the artist makes small paintings and collages to experiment with colors and consistency of the paint. Aiming for there to be an all over quality to the work, she experiments with different combinations of squares in diagonal compositions.
