Our Present Reeks of Our Past (2021) is a small, intimate, calm work and a straightforward self portrait of the artist. Hancock sees his entire oeuvre as self-portraits but this one more directly so. Often looking inwards, looking at himself is a starting point when he approaches a blank canvas. The title alludes to the current moment and a subjectivity when looking at where one is in the world. Hancock’s expression is peaceful and has a heavenly aura. The work, Torpedo Boy in Warrior Mode (2021) was made in response to this piece, showing the split in Hancock’s personality, the more divergent side to himself.
