‘Persephone holding a pomegranate seed’ was created for Stein’s solo exhibition ‘Wet Room’ at the De La Warr Pavilion in 2022. The work is a hand painted ceramic tile piece, which speaks to mythic tableau. The figure refers to an unrealised sculpture by artist Frank Dobson, which was proposed to stand outside the De La Warr Pavilion staring out at the sea. Lucy Stein reimagines the Greek goddess Persephone, queen of the underworld and goddess of springtime, in a powerful, feminine portrayal.
