'Uphill' uses the recurring motif of a small human figure overtaken by a vast landscape, a motif well loved by Kiff. And as with most works which Kiff made during his National Gallery residency, this painting quotes a work from the National Gallery’s collection. The scene in Uphill is a reinterpretation of Honoré-Victorin Daumier painting of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, painted ca. 1855. Uphill was part of Kiff’s solo exhibition at the National Gallery in 1993.
