Spring Colour Study no. 17 (1995) evokes a sense of fun and joy in the tumbling blocks of colour. The mood is a continuation of the happiness and freedom she felt after retiring from her teaching position. Predominantly using primary colours, the artist describes the hues as a ‘red red, a yellow yellow’ and so on - there is a purity in the glowing colours on the canvas. In this piece Webb cuts through the picture plane to create a three-in-one compositional structure, inspired by the tripartite hatched paintings by Jasper Johns, for example Scent 1973-4. The considered relationship between colour and form creates a serene quality to the works, providing an antidote to the fast-paced world we live in: inviting the viewer to enter a contemplative uplifted state.
